Recreation
Over a century of championship golf qualifies the Sandhills as the "Golf Capital of America". However, don't let that fool you, if equestrian pursuits is more your style, the area also boast some the country's best facilities and trials. Tennis and cycling enthusiasts have not been overlooked either. The Tour De Moore is regarded by most as an excellent training opportunity for international cyclists going into the Tour De France. All clubs offer excellent tennis centers and Pinehurst has hosted the US Open Clay Court Championship a number of times. Pinehurst
Founded when James Walker Tufts purchased 5000 acres in 1895, he envisioned a health resort and walking village for Northerners. He brought in famed Frederick Law Olmstead, of Central Park fame, to design and develop his dream. During the early 1900s, the resort included 4 hotels, 50+ cottages, several lovely golf courses and a large shooting preserve. Donald Ross refined the original dream and established what became Pinehurst #2 and host to numerous and legendary tournaments spanning two centuries.

Southern Pines
Charles Shaw saw opportunity in the southern part of the county and acquired a state land grant. A health resort and railroad from the north ensured Southern Pines' longevity and fame. During World War I we played host to family, friends, doctors and trainees. There are still several homes in town bearing the marks of the impromptu hospitals and recovery centers. James Boyd brought the equestrian and literary pursuits that prevail today in this lush part of the county.

Aberdeen
Established around a vital crossroad, the town was flourishing in the late 1700s. A hub of activity, Aberdeen hosted two railroads with turpentine and lumber being the center of commerce. Today, the historic district of encompasses more than 88 acres, over 100 buildings, numerous antique shops, collectibles and artist galleries.

Whispering Pines
Founded by Nicholas Smith in 1769, his mill was used to grind corn for rations during the American Revolution. The town remained a sleepy mill and power plant until1959 when A.B. Hardee began a golf and residential development. Today, it includes six lakes several golf courses.

National CC - Southern Pines
Where membership still has its privileges, this private gated community hosts a magnificent 18-hole Jack Nicklaus signature golf course, outstanding clubhouse with Grill, formal dining and meeting rooms, members club, lounge, swim center, and a full service tennis facility.

Old Town - Pinehurst
